MEETING OF THE AFRICAN REGION
OF THE CARMELITE NGO
September 10-12, 2010
Summary Report
The most serious issues on
climate change in Africa are the effects on landforms: rivers and
deserts. These are subject to human activity of farming, cutting
down trees, wild and manmade fires. Africa is made up of both
fertile land and deserts, mountains and rivers which supply the
food, and water. Due to the significant changes in climate in the
recent years, Africa has suffered from drought, and diseases such as
Malaria, cholera. The problems experienced calls for development in
the areas of pollution, care for rivers which are filled with silt,
care for wild animals, policies on measures to control burning
bushes, policies on tree planting, and need for educating the people
on how to conserve the environment to avoid serious consequences on
human life and the mother earth.
Challenges in Africa
The above diagram
illustrates the vicious cycle of the work being done by Carmelites
in Africa.
This year there was great
awareness of the need to know more about climate change. There was a
workshop in Zimbabwe arranged for those in initial formation. The
main topics were: Climate Change, Scientific and practical study;
Experience in Africa with special focus on climate change and
related issues.
The focus is that the
Carmelites will continue to reflect and educate to bring justice and
peace, care for creation and respect for human life and the mother
earth.
