Many children in Indonesia live in families that are confronted with economic hardships. They are disadvantaged in terms of survival, health, education and access to services. The problems of children from poor families are child trafficking, child labour, child Prostitution, children in crime and violence, child domestic workers, street children, and low quality education.

To answer the social issues, since 2010 Indonesian Carmelite NGO has opened study houses. A study house is a center where children of poor families may improve the knowledge and competence by having free lessons.
At present Indonesian Carmelite NGO runs four study houses: 3 houses are located in Malang – Java while one is in Pontianak – Kalimantan.
The houses are located in remote slum areas. The houses provide library. Beside Math and English classes, the houses offer music and art classes.
