William J. Harry, O.Carm.
<\/strong>President<\/p>

Fr. William was appointed as the second president of the Carmelite NGO on April 2, 2025. He previously served as a member of the Carmelite NGO Board from 2002 until 2019. During those years, he focused primarily on communications for the organizations\u2014particularly with the website and CarmeNGO<\/em>. He also participated in several of the annual UN DPI meetings in New York as well as one in both Bonn and Paris. He also represented the Carmelite NGO at the Doha Review Conference on Financing for Development in 2008.<\/p>

His ministries as a Carmelite have focused on education, administration, and communications. As a young Carmelite he taught a variety of subjects and was the campus minister at the Carmelite secondary school in Tucson, Arizona. He worked in school administration for 10 years, and then provincial administration. Beginning in 2001, he served six years in Rome on the General Council of the Order. He currently is the director of communications for the Order and his home province\u2019s publishing house. He also serves on the Board of Directors of two Carmelite schools in the United States.<\/p>

He earned a M.Ed. degree in Educational Administration from the University of Arizona, a S.T.B. in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and an S.T.L. in Spirituality and a D.Min. in Theology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Eduardo Scarel, O.Carm.
<\/strong>Vice President<\/p>

Fr. Eduardo has worked with the Carmelite NGO on several levels since 2010, focusing on climate change. He heads the Department of Integral Ecology of the Spanish Episcopal Conference and is a visiting researcher in climatology at the University of Valencia. He is also part of the Chair of Integral Ecology at the Catholic University of Valencia. His work focuses on climate variability, atmospheric teleconnections and large-scale climate factors, as well as the relationship between climate science and integral ecology from a theological perspective. He holds a degree in Physics, specializing in Atmospheric Sciences, and obtained his PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires in 2006.<\/p>

Eduardo has published scientific articles and written book chapters on the relationship between science, faith, spirituality, and ecology. Since 2016, he has collaborated as an external expert for the Pontifical Council for Integral Human Development and represented CELAM at climate meetings of the Holy See. He was part of the Vatican delegation at the COP27 and COP28 climate summits. He has represented the Carmelite NGO at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. He is also a member of the Carmelite Order’s International Commission for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation. He has advised episcopal conferences in Latin America on integral ecology and led interdisciplinary research teams on climate change.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Hariawan Adji, O.Carm.
<\/strong>Member<\/p>

Fr. Hariwan Adji was elected as the vice prior general of the Carmelite Order in 2025. He has been involved in peace and justice issues for many years. He was the representative of the Asian area to the Carmelite NGO from 2006-2024. He was also head of the Indonesian Carmelite NGO from 2010 until his election as vice general. He also served as a member of the Order\u2019s Justice and Peace and Integrity of Creation Commission from 2013-2025.<\/p>

For over 30 years, Fr. Hariawan was lecturer at the Airlangga University in Surabaya, Indonesia (1992 – present). From 1993-2000, he was the director of Studies at Access English Centre, also in Surabaya.<\/p>

He was prior provincial of the Indonesian Province from 2022 until his election as vice general. Prior to that he served as vice prior provincial of the province the previous six years.<\/p>

He holds three Bachelor degrees: in English Linguistics (1992), in Industrial Management (1993), and in Christian Philosophy and Theology (2006). He also holds Masters degrees in Biostatistics (2000) and Christian Philosophy and Theology (2009). He also holds a Doctorate in Inter-religious Studies (2017).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Dennis Kalob
<\/strong>Chief Administrative Officer<\/span><\/p>

Dennis is a sociologist and has taught at several colleges and universities in the United States. His lifelong commitment to peace and justice\u2014and his activism\u2014connected him with Sr. Jane Remson, the first president of the Carmelite NGO, many years ago. She invited him to serve in the NGO in 2015 and he welcomed the opportunity.” His work in education specializes in issues pertaining to social inequality, health care, political economy, social action, and public policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Dr. Kalob serves as the director of the Carmelite Order\u2019s Most Pure Heart of Mary Province\u2019s Laudato Si\u2019 Action Plan<\/em>, a strategic effort developed by the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Commission of the province aimed at integrating Pope Francis\u2019 call to care for our common home into the daily life and ministry of the Carmelites.\u00a0<\/p>

As chief administrative officer, he facilitates the visits of members of the Carmelite NGO to the UN headquarters in New York as well as attendance of members at UN meetings in various parts of the world. He is a regular presence in NY networking with other NGOs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Carmelite NGO Long Range Plan<\/h3>

I) Build an NGO structure which facilitates the mission<\/p>

+ Re-register the Carmelite NGO under the Carmelite Order as a separate 501c3
corporation.
+ Establish teams of experts to advocate in the four focus areas at the NGO: Freedom of
Belief; Sustainable Development; Human Rights; and Education.
+ Coordinate our initiatives with the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Commission
of the Carmelite Order.
+ Develop a policy and procedures manual that clarifies board and executive committee
membership, required meetings per year, financial requirements, etc.<\/p>

II) Develop an effective communications program<\/p>

+ Conduct regular meetings of the Executive Committee and the Board of the Carmelite
NGO.
+ Develop a five-year plan which is reviewed and updated by the Board of the Carmelite
NGO annually.
+ Create informational and communications materials (infographics, posters, etc.)
+ Develop a clear and consistent Carmelite voice on key issues in the Carmelite NGO\u2019s
areas of focus at the UN and in other global forums.
+ Create a webpage that is a repository of information about the United Nations and the
Carmelite NGO in its areas of focus at the UN.
+ Coordinate and regularly post information germane to the Carmelite NGO on multiple
social media platforms.<\/p>

III) Partner with experts who can speak with credibility at the UN<\/p>

+ Actively participate in UN conferences, advocating with authority for sustainable
development, human rights, education and religious freedom.
+ Invite those involved and interested in the Carmelite NGO focus areas to participate in
discussions regarding the vision, mission, and plan.<\/p>

IV) Obtain the resources to advocate effectively<\/p>

+ Establish an annual budget that supports the goals of the five-year plan and facilitates its
execution.
+ Raise sufficient funds to facilitate greater presence in the Carmelite Family, the local
Church, and the UN.<\/p>

V) Network with other NGOs to strengthen advocacy work at the UN<\/p>

+ Strengthen ties with other Catholic NGOs through active participation in the NGO
network.
+ Establish contacts with other NGOs working in the Carmelite NGO\u2019s focus areas.
+ Build bridges through interfaith and ecumenical collaboration using the Carmelite
tradition of dialogue to connect people of different faiths around shared concerns.
+ Network with other NGOs to organize joint initiatives, public statements, and campaigns
that show unity in action.
+ Be present. Advocate for policy change at the UN and among international governmental
leaders by being present and hosting sessions during international conferences.<\/p>

VI) Networking with the Carmelite Family<\/p>

+ Educate the Carmelite Family with regards to the Carmelite NGO\u2019s work.
+ Commend and publicize Carmelite related programs already in existence or in formative
stages that parallel the advocacy areas championed by the NGO.
+ Support the ministries within the Carmelite family that are within the focus areas of the
Carmelite NGO.<\/p>

VII) Increase Awareness within the Order\/Family<\/p>

+ Develop an educational component demonstrating the connection among the NGO,
Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation Commission and Carmelite spirituality.
+ Connect the Carmelite NGO advocacy work to the Carmelite Family\u2019s response to the
