Laudato Si ’(” Praise you, Lord “) is a pastoral letter from Pope Francis focused on the care for creation, our common home.
In this encyclical letter, the Pope criticizes consumerism and irresponsible development, regrets environmental degradation and global warming, and calls all people in the world to take “rapid and unified global measures.” The title of the social encyclical comes from the “Canticle of the Creatures” of St. Francis of Assisi of the thirteenth century, and is a poem and prayer in which God is praised for the creation of the different creatures and aspects of the Earth.
The tone of the writing of the letter of the Pope has been described as “cautious and not very dogmatic”, and where he specifically calls for discussion and dialogue. The Pope adds that “although the post-industrial period may well be remembered as one of the most irresponsible in history, there are reasons to expect humanity at the dawn of the 21st century to be remembered for having generously assumed its grave responsibilities.” Francisco states that Concern for the natural world is no longer “optional” but is an integral part of the Church’s teaching on social justice.
Along these lines, this Curriculum is intended to help young people to fulfill Pope Francis’ invitation to pay special attention to God’s creation, to realize that we need each other, and that we have a responsibility personal to others and the world in which we live.
The Curriculum offers a progressive and experiential learning design, so that students, guided by environmental sciences, the Word of God and the richness of Carmelite spirituality, can integrate into their lives an integral ecological awareness of the responsible care of the Earth, the only home for everyone.
This lesson plan on environmental issues and the care of creation was developed with the participation and contributions of the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary of the Order of the Carmelites, the Catholic High School “Salpointe” , the Singing for Change Foundation, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, the Little Flower Society and individual donors.
